Why Study Physics at GCSE and A Level?

Big Questions and Grand Mysteries

Physics is one of the most majestic and thought-provoking subjects amongst the natural sciences. Physics asks some of the biggest questions and explores the grandest of mysteries. Why do objects move as they do? What is electricity? How does light travel? Is there a limit to how fast can a spaceship go? What is antimatter? Studying physics at GCSE and A Level gives students the tools to explore these questions and to begin to understand the wonder of our natural world.

Physics is a subject that is well worth studying

At GCSE, physics provides a foundation for understanding the world around us. Topics such as forces, energy, electricity and waves explain everyday things, from how a microwave oven works to why a fairground roller-coaster is such fun to ride! Students also learn to carry out experiments, handle data and draw careful conclusions, which are skills that matter in every science.

GCSE Physics also makes use of formulas, calculations and graphs and consequently strengths a student’s grasp of maths. Students regularly rearrange equations, work with units and apply formulas to real situations, which shows maths as a practical tool rather than an abstract exercise. The two subjects support each other very well.

At A Level, the student takes a deeper dive into physics. Students tackle more demanding ideas and learn to reason through unfamiliar problems step-by-step. This kind of logical, analytical thinking is valuable well beyond the school classroom. A Level Physics is also often looked for by universities offering courses in engineering, aerospace and the physical sciences, so it can keep important doors open. Students should always check the entry requirements of the courses that interest them.

Perhaps most importantly, physics develops problem-solving skills, mental agility and resilience. Problems rarely look the same twice, and students learn to break a challenge into manageable parts, test their ideas and persevere when the answer is not obvious.

With the right support, physics can be a rewarding and enjoyable subject. A good tutor can explain difficult ideas patiently, build confidence and help students approach exams well prepared. Whether a student dreams of becoming an engineer or simply wants to understand how the world works, physics is a subject that is well worth studying.
